Precision Microbiome Medicine: The Flore Clinical Approach
October 11, 2022 by Flore Clinical Editorial
Precision microbiome medicine — the systematic integration of individual microbiome characterization into clinical decision-making — represents the convergence of microbiome science, personalized medicine, and evidence-based clinical practice. Flore Clinical's approach embodies this integration: each patient's microbiome is characterized, deficits are identified, and a personalized probiotic formulation is constructed from clinically validated strains, updated monthly as the microbiome evolves.
The Flore Clinical Framework
Our clinical framework operates in four phases:
- Characterization: Comprehensive microbiome analysis identifying species composition, keystone species status (Akkermansia, F. prausnitzii), pathobiont detection (B. wadsworthia, ETBF, AIEC), and functional capacity assessment (SCFA production, bile acid metabolism)
- Clinical correlation: Mapping microbiome findings to patient symptoms, conditions, medications, and risk factors — identifying clinically actionable deficits
- Formulation: Selecting validated probiotic strains targeting identified deficits, at effective doses (8B CFU per capsule standard), with evidence-based strain-indication matching
- Monitoring and iteration: Monthly microbiome reassessment with formulation adjustment based on response — the precision feedback loop that differentiates our approach from static protocols
Evidence Integration
Every strain in a Flore Clinical formulation is selected based on Level I-III evidence for the specific clinical indication identified. We do not include strains without clinical evidence for the patient's specific conditions. This applies to the entire formulation catalog — from B. longum W11 for barrier defense to Lactobacillus strains for GI symptom management.
Provider Integration
Flore Clinical works alongside your existing clinical practice. Providers maintain full visibility into patient microbiome data, formulation composition, and response tracking through the Flore Clinical portal. Formulations are dispensed directly to patients on a subscription basis with provider-initiated adjustments available at any time. For providers new to microbiome medicine, our clinical team provides consultation support and ongoing education through this clinical insights series.
